July 15, 2023 – Canal and Trails into Pittsford

This week’s route involves a series of trails that intersect the canal path towards Pittsford.

Head out the canal towards Pittsford. When you get to the soccer fields – turn right along a grassy path bordering the soccer fields on the right. This will lead to a gravel pathway that will circle around the soccer fields are return you to the canal just past the town park. Continue on the canal towards Pittsford.

After you cross the Duck Hunt Bridge, bear right onto the Auburn trail. Cross over Mitchell and continue on the Auburn Trail. Turn right at the end and cross over Rt. 31. Turn right on the walkway that parallels Rt.31 and head back towards Marsh Rd. Turn left on Marsh Rd, then turn right onto the old Trolley Bed Trail. This will take you over thru the Highlands at Pittsford. The trail will lead you back to 31.Cross over 31 and head under the power lines back to the canal. Turn right on the canal and again head towards Pittsford.

Pass by the Town Highway Department Garage. Pick up the trail on the right after passing the train trestle and before you reach Rt. 31 (the second time rt. 31 crosses the canal). Take this trail – it will lead over to the Auburn Trail. Turn right on the Auburn Trail, and then reconnect with the canal.

Head back towards the basin on the canal. On the return trip, turn left under the power lines to pick up the Auburn Trail, turn right, cross back over Mitchell and continue back to the canal path. Take the trail loop back around the soccer fields, then continue on the canal back to the basin and then to the parking lot.

This distance is 10.8 miles.

For 14.5 miles – when you reach the Auburn Trail after running thru the new trail from the canal, turn left on the Auburn Trail – and proceed like it is a Springhouse Run – stay on the Auburn Trail until you are across from the Birdhouse Shop, cross over 31 and pick up the old Erie Canal Trail that runs behind Wegmans, then turn left on the Barge Canal Trail. Take all the side trails that the main route follows as well.

July 8, 2023 – A Few Hills

Let’s run this hilly route this weekend!

Turn left out of the parking lot, and head towards the mall on Rt. 96.

Turn left to go up Woodcliff.

Turn left on Moseley.

Turn right on Garnsey.

Turn right to go up Vineyard Hill.

Turn left on Neuchatel, then left on Beauclaire.

Turn right on Turk Hill. This will bring you back towards the mall.

Turn left into the shopping plaza formerly occupied by Dick’s.

Turn left to go up High Point. This will take you out to Valentown.

Turn left on Valentown.

Turn left to go up Baker.

Turn left to go down Steele.

Turn right to go up Turk.

Turn left to go down Garnsey.

A right turn at 96 returns you to the parking lot.

Distance is 12 miles

For 14.4 miles – follow the 12 mile route until you are at the top of Baker. Continue straight on Thayer. At the intersection with Bluhm, turn left to continue on Thayer. Turn left on 31, then left to go up Turk Hill. Turn right on Garnsey and rejoin the 12 mile route.

When Woodcliff runs into Moseley, turn right.

Turn left onto Rt. 96.

Then a left to go up High Point (just before Starbucks on 96) and rejoin the 12 mile route.

On 96 turn left onto Turk Hill.

July 1, 2023 – Carterville Trail and Auburn Trail

Given the forecast for high humidity, I have selected a route this week that minimizes hills and maximizes shade –

Turn right out of the parking lot and run 96 towards the Basin. Pick up the Cartersville trail on the right, between Marsh Road and the Marathon gas station, Stay on the trail until you are almost across from Knickerbocker. Cross over 96 and get on the Auburn Trail from the parking area.  Cross over Mill Rd, and then cross over Thornell to stay on the Auburn Trail – this will bring you to a driveway that leads to East St. Cross over East St and stay on the Auburn Trail, picking up the trail behind the power substation. Cross over Railroad Mills to stay on Auburn Trail

For 7.8 miles – turn left Woolston, then left on Corduroy. Turn right on Park Rd, then left on 96 and return to the parking lot

June 24, 2023 – Linear Park Run

Head out the canal path towards Fairport.  Exit the canal left onto O’Connor.  Turn left on Whitney.  Whitney will turn into Five Mile Line Rd.  Turn left on Rt. 441, then left into Linear Park.  Cross over Irondequoit Creek and head up the hill.  Turn left on Lincoln Mills, left on Linden then right on Bluff.  Turn left into Eyer Park.  Take the trail over to Midvale – turn left.  Turn right on Baird, left into BOCES, then take the trail around the back.  Turn right on O’Connor and then right on the canal and back to the basin.  Distance is 13.5 miles.

For 11.8 miles, turn left on Linden from Whitney and then left on Bluff Dr., rejoining the main route

For 9.2 miles – on Whitney – turn left on Baird, then left into BOCES, rejoining the main trail

For 7.5 miles – run the canal until you get to O’Connor, then turn around and retrace your steps back to the parking lot.

For 16 miles – follow the main route – when you return to the canal turn left and run over to Turk Hill. Turn around and follow the canal back to the basin.

June 17, 2023 – The Fishers Run

The traditional Fishers Run, from the parking lot is 9.5 miles – Turn left onto 96, right on Park Rd.  Turn left on Corduroy, and then left on Woolston.  Turn right on Fishers Rd, then left on Main St. Fishers.  Turn left on Log Cabin, then right on Lower Fishers, and then left on Benson.  Turn right on Fishers Rd, then return thru Powder Mills Park (left on Woolston, right on Corduroy, right on Park Rd)  Turn left on 96 and back to the parking lot.

Note: You can skip the Lower Fishers option by staying on Log Cabin. This shortens any route by 1 mile.

You can skip Powder Mills Park on the way back by staying on Fishers Rd to 96. This shortens any route by 0.5 miles

For 7.5 miles – take 96 directly to Fishers Rd. Left on Main St. Fishers, then left on Log Cabin. Stay on Log Cabin, then left on Benson, right on Fishers Rd, then left on 96.

For 12.5 miles – start with the standard route. At Main St. Fishers, turn right, then take a left on Old Dutch. Turn left on 251, left on Wangum, then right on Main St Fishers, and rejoin the standard route. Or take the Lehigh Trail over to Wangum.

Head out the canal towards Fairport. Turn left onto O’Connor, then turn right on Whitney. Turn right on 250. Follow this all the way to 96. Turn right on 96 and return to the basin. Distance is 12.1 miles.

For 10.7 miles – on Moseley – turn right on Garnsey, then right on 96.

For 13.7 miles – on Rt. 96 just before getting back to the Park&Ride – turn left on Fishers Rd., right on Woolston, right on Corduroy, right on Park Rd, left on 96.

For 15.6 miles – on Rt. 96 just before getting back to the Park&Ride – turn left on Fishers Rd., right on Woolston, right on Railroad Mills, right on Park Rd. left on 96.

June 3, 2023 –Knickerbocker Hill.

All routes – start by turning left out of the parking lot. Then turn right on Park Rd, right on East, left on Thornell and then a right on Mill. Turn left on East, then left on 96.

For 8 miles – turn right on Mitchell, then turn right on the Auburn Trail that takes you to the canal. Follow the Canal back to the basin.

May 27, 2023 – Up Thayer or Trails thru Indian Hill to Crescent Trail

Road Routes:

Turn left on 96, then left on Garnsey, turn left on Turk Hill, then right on 31.  Turn right on Thayer, right on Steele, cross over Turk into Beaumont, right on Neuchatel, right on Vineyard Hill, left on Garnsey and back to the basin.  Distance is 10 miles.

For 11.3 – on Turk Hill continue heading north across Rt. 31. Turn right on Ayrault, then turn right on Hogan, then left on 31.  Turn right onto Thayer and rejoin the 10 mile route.

For 13 – stay on Turk Hill until you get to Pebble Hill Rd.  Turn right on Pebble Hill Rd, then right on Bridgewood Dr..then a right on Falling Brook Rd. This will bring you to Ayrault – turn left on Ayrault, then rejoin the 11.3 mile route with a right on Hogan.

Trails – follow road route until on Rt. 31. Turn right into the Indian Section of the Crescent Trail. Follow the trail over to Turk Hill. Turn left on Turk and pick up the Crescent Trail on the right. Follow the Crescent Trail all the way back to Garnsey. Left on Garnsey and then right on 96 to return to the parking lot. Distance is 11.3 miles. (Your actual distance will vary depending on which trail options you take)

May 20, 2023 – Bromsgrove Hill Cul-de-Sac and others

Turn right out of the parking lot. Turn left onto Thornell. Take Thornell until you get to the traffic light – turn left on Pittsford Mendon Rd. Turn left on Bromgrove Hill. At the end of the cul-de-sac, pick up the pedestrian path. This will take you over to Sunrise Park.

At the next intersection, turn left to stay on Sunrise Park. This will bring you to Van Voorhis. Turn right on Van Voorhis, followed by a left on Pittsford Mendon Rd. Then take a left on Hedgewood Lane. Look for a pedestrian path between two houses – take the pedestrian path. This will take you over to Wren Field. Turn left on Wren Field, then take the pedestrian path at the end of the cul-de-sac over to Van Voorhis. Turn right on Van Voorhis. Then turn right on East/Mile Square. Turn left on Probst, the left on Railroad Mills. Turn right on Woolston, then left on Corduroy, right on Park Rd, then left on 96 and return to the parking lot. Distance is 12.1 miles

May 13, 2023 – Gillis Rd

All routes – turn left out of the parking lot and head up 96 to the Mall. Turn left onto High St Extension and then left onto High St.

For 12.1 miles – from High St, turn left on Gillis, then left on Cobble Creek Rd. Take the first two right turns to continue on Cobble Creek Rd. Turn left on Egypt Victor Rd, then left on Valentown. Turn right to head up Baker, then left on Steele. Cross over Turk Hill and continue on Beauclaire. Turn right on Neuchatel, right on Vineyard Hill, then left on Garnsey. Turn right on 96 and return to the parking lot.
