Routes that feature primarily roads as the running surface

December 15, 2018 –Knickerbocker Hill.

Please note: The run start location is not changing. We will continue to start from the Park and Ride at Bushnell’s Basin. I apologize for anything I said that was misleading on Saturday.

After Run Meeting Location December 15, 2018 – Bruegger’s Bagels

A couple of us checked out the Village Bakery Café at Eastview Mall on Sunday morning, and we were very favorably impressed. The food was very good with a larger selection, including French toast, a variety of egg sandwiches, pastries, and they have a selection of coffees and cappuccino. The seating area is up a flight of stairs – and they have 30 metal chairs – so we won’t have to worry about ruining the chairs with our wet running gear. The external entrance is located near P.F. Changs. In the warmer weather they have outdoor seating. I spoke to the manager and he seemed to think they could handle our group as longas we gave him some advanced notice, so that he has enough help on hand. We should probably wait until the holiday traffic has subsided before we try it.

And now for the route….

All routes – start by turning left out of the parking lot. Then turn right on Park Rd, right on East, left on Thornell and then a right on Mill. Turn left on East, then left on 96.

For 8 miles – turn right on Mitchell, then turn right on the Auburn Trail that takes you to the canal. Follow the Canal back to the basin.

November 24, 2018 – The Springhouse Run

November 24, 2018 – Springhouse Run

The Mellow Mug is closing. We received news this week that the Mellow Mug will be closing at the end of the day on Saturday, December 8. In addition, the rumor is that the owner of the building is not interested in having a coffee shop at this location anymore. This is a sad day for the Oven Door Runners, as that location has been our post-run meeting place for 22 years! In the coming weeks we will need to decide on where we would like to meet after the run. In the basin, we have Bruggers and Tim Horton’s. The hotel next to the 490 on-ramp serves breakfast, though I don’t know if they would welcome non-guests. There are some options up at the mall, or into Pittsford village. I think it is important that we find a location we all agree on, as I see the post-run coffee as an important part of our group.

I propose that we hold our annual Christmas Holiday Picture Run on December 8, so that we can have one last picture at the coffee shop, so mark your calendars!

As for the route this week….

Head out the canal towards Pittsford. In the village, go past the railroad trestle and turn right into the Town Highway Department drive. Pick up the trail on the left that will connect over to the Auburn Trail. Cross over French and follow the trail until you are across the street from the Springhouse Commons. Cross over 31 and pick up the old Erie Canal Trail that runs behind Wegmans. Follow this back across French Rd and connect back with the Barge Canal, and follow the canal all the way back to the Basin. Distance is 11.6 miles.

For around 8 miles, stay on the canal to the 2nd time Rt 31 crosses the canal, turn around and retrace your steps.

October 27, 2018 – Halloween Picture Run to Powers Farm Market

October 27, 2018 – Halloween Picture Run to Powers Farm Market

This week is the annual Halloween Picture Run to Powers Farm Market. Given that the Marsh Road Bridge is still officially closed (due to open up November 1, by the way) I am going to have to modify the route to Powers. One option was to send runners along the Cartersville Trail on the way there, but I think it is too dark at that time for that to be a good option. So I have come up with several options for you to consider. Each option is just the distance to Powers. I have included one return trip option – you are welcome to modify any route.

I am aiming for  7:45 – 8:00 am for the picture, so chose your distance accordingly

For the faster runners – Distance to Powers – 7.6 miles

Turn right out of the parking lot, turn right on Kreag Rd, then left on 31, take the ramp to the canal and follow the canal towards Pittsford. From here, run the traditional route to Powers – exit the canal at Schoen Place, turn right on N. Main St (96), then right on Washington followed by a right on Golf. A left into the parking lot of Powers just before Marsh Rd and you are there.

http://www.gmap-pedometer.com/?r=7313230

Distance to Powers – 6 miles

Start with the main route. Take the trail connector to Marsh Road just before the flood control gate. Take Marsh Rd to Powers.

 http://www.gmap-pedometer.com/?r=7313231

Distance to Powers – 4.5 miles

Start with the main route. On 31, stay on 31 past the canal all the way to Marsh Road. Be very careful with this option as this road can be busy and not great for runners especially near the 490 intersection. Turn right on Marsh and make your way to Powers.

http://www.gmap-pedometer.com/?r=7313233

For the return trip from Powers – 5.2 miles– Take Marsh Road – just before Rt 31 take the Trolley Trail on the right that runs over to the Highlands at Pittsford. Cross over 31 and pick up the Auburn Trail over to Mitchell. Turn right on Mitchell, then left on 96. Pick up the Cartersville Trail between the canal and 96 and return to the basin.
